故事发生在湖南武冈，南明朝永历皇帝一度偏安于此，以图反清复明。武冈是明朝建国之初由明太祖朱元璋分封的岷国藩王的都城。如今的朱岷王是永历皇帝的皇叔，他见南明大势已去便勾结清兵，被永历皇帝派人暗杀，但朱岷王的头颅不知去见。南明决定继续南撤，为了转移从北京带出的金银财宝（反清复明的资本），永历皇帝决定厚葬朱岷王，铸造黄金头颅入殓，以遮人耳目。天下盗墓贼及土匪云集武冈，明清之间展开了一场角逐。故事的部分情节根据民间传说做了虚构。。1937年冬，南京陷落后，五个中央陆军军官学校学生，一腔孤勇护送一个舞女和一个婴儿去当时南京的安全区。以鲜血和生命告诉侵略者，虽然战场上输了，但中华民族不屈抗争的精神不会输。。Speedy" loses his job as a soda-jerk, then spends the day with his girl at Coney Island. He then becomes a cab driver and delivers Babe Ruth to Yankee Stadium, where he stays to see the game. When the railroad tries to run the last horse-drawn trolley (operated by his girl's grandfather) out of business, "Speedy" organizes the neighborhood oldtimers to thwart their scheme.。
